STATE ASSEMBLY TO VOTE WEDNESDAY ON BILL PERMITTING PHARMACISTS TO PRESCRIBE CONTRACEPTIVES

The Wisconsin Assembly has scheduled a floor vote this Wednesday, October 27, on Assembly Bill (AB) 36, legislation authored by Representatives Joel Kitchens (R-Sturgeon Bay) and Mary Felzkowski (R-Irma) permitting pharmacists to prescribe and dispense hormonal contraceptive patches (the Patch) and self-administered oral hormonal contraceptives (the Pill) to persons 18 years of age and older. Currently, the Pill and the Patch may only be prescribed by a physician.

Pro-Life Wisconsin (PLW) OPPOSES any legislation that makes hormonal contraceptives more easily accessible or widely available. On October 7, PLW Legislative Director Matt Sande testified before the Assembly Committee on Health in opposition to AB 36. On October 19, the bill was recommended for Assembly floor passage by the Health Committee on a 10-3 vote with Representatives Chuck Wichgers (R-Muskego), Dave Murphy (R-Greenville), and Rachael Cabral-Guevara (R-Appleton) voting NO.

Attempting to lower unplanned pregnancies by making contraceptives more easily accessible simply doesn’t work. A significant percentage of unintended pregnancies are in women using contraceptives, generally over 40% and in some studies up to 68%.

Hormonal contraceptives can cause pre-implantation chemical abortions by altering the lining of the uterus (endometrium) so that a newly conceived child (human embryo) is unable to implant in the womb, thus starving and dying. Hormonal contraceptives have also been proven dangerous to women’s health. The Pill is a known Group 1 carcinogen for breast, cervical and liver cancers according to the United Nation’s International Agency on Research of Cancer.

Elizabeth Anderson, MD, Assistant State Director of the Wisconsin Catholic Medical Guilds, provided written testimony to the Assembly Committee on Health in opposition to AB 36. According to Dr. Anderson, AB 36 is to be strongly opposed because,

“[…] the patient-physician relationship is of utmost importance in providing safe, quality healthcare to individuals. This bill would eliminate that relationship, undermining the ongoing necessary healthcare that a patient should have with any prescription medication and any health condition. Primary care physicians have a unique relationship with their patients in which they can provide individualized counseling and recommendations, as well as discuss risks of prescription medications unique to each individual patient. This relationship and individualized care are eliminated if this bill moves forward.”

Put simply, AB 36 is bad medicine. Wisconsin Family Action and the Wisconsin Catholic Conference also oppose AB 36.

ACT NOW!

Please
CALL or EMAIL your state representative TODAY and urge him/her to “Vote NO on AB 36.”

Tell them, “Hormonal contraceptives can kill embryonic children, are dangerous to women’s health, and do not reduce unplanned pregnancies!”

Tell them, “AB 36 eliminates the patient-physician relationship. It is bad medicine!”

PRO-LIFE NEWS

SUPREME COURT DOESN’T BLOCK TEXAS ABORTION LAW, SETS HEARING: (Associated Press) – “The Supreme Court is allowing the Texas law that bans most abortions to remain in place, but has agreed to hear arguments in the case in early November. […] The court’s action leaves in place for the time being a law that clinics say has led to an 80% reduction in abortions in the nation’s second-largest state.” Read the full story here. (NOTE: The Texas Heartbeat Act has an explicit exception for “medical emergency.” It has no exception for rape and incest or fetal anomaly.)

PRO-LIFE COUPLE RELEASES JOY-FILLED TRIBUTE TO PREBORN DAUGHTER WITH FATAL CONDITION: (LifeSiteNews) – “A pro-life activist couple is sharing with the world how a journey across the country has brought them joy and hope after their preborn daughter’s fatal diagnosis. The unborn baby girl, Ember Baker, is expected to live only hours after birth. Joe and Ann Baker, who co-founded the pro-life ministry Save the Storks, today released an eight-minute film about their family of three boys and unborn daughter. Ember has a nervous system condition that will make it impossible for her to survive outside the womb.” Watch the video and read the full story here.

NFL STAR SPEAKS POWERFUL PRO-LIFE MESSAGE: ‘THERE ARE NO UNPLANNED LIVES’: (Live Action News) – “Former NFL defensive end Kenyon Coleman recently spoke with Live Action during a man-on-the-street interview, revealing that he is deeply pro-life. He also spoke openly about his personal experience with abortion. […] Coleman considers himself to be ‘100% pro-life’ with no exceptions for children conceived in rape or incest, or children diagnosed with a medical condition while in the womb. From the moment of fertilization, he said, there is a unique life, and ‘at the end of the day, God is the creator and He loves His creation.’” Read the full story here.
