DONATE TO PRO-LIFE WISCONSIN'S LIFE SAVING WORK
STATE ASSEMBLY PASSES BILL ALLOWING PHARMACISTS TO PRESCRIBE CONTRACEPTIVES

On an 83-7 bipartisan vote, the Wisconsin Assembly passed Assembly Bill (AB) 36 last Wednesday, legislation introduced by over 35 Republican state legislators in a misguided attempt to reduce unplanned pregnancies. The bill, authored by State Representatives Joel Kitchens (R-Sturgeon Bay) and Mary Felzkowski (R-Irma), permits pharmacists to prescribe and dispense hormonal contraceptive patches (the Patch) and self-administered oral hormonal contraceptives (the Pill) to persons 18 years of age and older. Currently, the Pill and the Patch may only be prescribed by a physician. Assembly Bill 36 now moves to the Wisconsin Senate.

Pro-Life Wisconsin commends the 7 Republican state representatives who courageously voted NO on AB 36: Scott Allen (R-Waukesha); Janel Brandtjen (R-Menomonee Falls); David Murphy (R-Greenville); Timothy Ramthun (R-Campbellsport); Shae Sortwell (R-Two Rivers); Jeremy Thiesfeldt (R-Fond du Lac); and Chuck Wichgers (R-Muskego). If one of these pro-life heroes is your state representative, please call him or her and express your thanks. We especially thank Representatives Wichgers and Allen for leading the fight against AB 36.

Pro-Life Wisconsin (PLW) OPPOSES any legislation that makes hormonal contraceptives more easily accessible or widely available. On October 7, PLW Legislative Director Matt Sande testified before the Assembly Committee on Health in opposition to AB 36. Three other statewide pro-life organizations also testified/registered against AB 36: Wisconsin Family Action, the Wisconsin Catholic Conference, and the Wisconsin Catholic Medical Guilds.

Assembly Bill 36 is bad legislation for multiple reasons:

  • It ends the patient-physician relationship. According to the Wisconsin Catholic Medical Guilds, “Primary care physicians have a unique relationship with their patients in which they can provide individualized counseling and recommendations, as well as discuss risks of prescription medications unique to each individual patient. This relationship and individualized care are eliminated if this bill moves forward." AB 36 is bad medicine.
  • After the year-long Covid-19 healthcare disruption, denying thousands of patients access to routine checkups, it is now more important than ever to encourage women to reengage with their primary care and Ob/Gyn physicians. AB 36 encourages the opposite.
  • Attempting to lower unplanned pregnancies by making contraceptives more easily accessible simply doesn’t work. A significant percentage of unintended pregnancies are in women using contraceptives, generally over 40% and in some studies up to 68%.
  • Hormonal contraceptives can cause pre-implantation chemical abortions by altering the lining of the uterus (endometrium) so that a newly conceived child (human embryo) is unable to implant in the womb, thus starving and dying.
  • Hormonal contraceptives have been proven dangerous to women’s health. The Pill is a known Group 1 carcinogen for breast, cervical, and liver cancers according to the UN’s International Agency on Research of Cancer. It is not the proper role of pharmacists to diagnose health conditions and prescribe powerful medications with clear health risks.

ACT NOW!
With your help, Pro-Life Wisconsin will continue to lead the fight against AB 36 and its companion bill, Senate Bill (SB) 30, in the Wisconsin Senate.

Please CALL or EMAIL your state senator TODAY and urge him/her to “Oppose AB 36 & SB 30.”

  • Tell them, “Hormonal contraceptives can kill embryonic children, are dangerous to women’s health, and do not reduce unplanned pregnancies!”

  • Tell them, “AB 36/SB 30 eliminates the patient-physician relationship. It is bad medicine!”

Don’t know your State Senator? Go to legis.wisconsin.gov and type in your home address under “Who Are My Legislators” or call the Legislative Hotline: 1-800-362-9472.

We thank all of you who made calls to your state representatives, urging them to oppose this ineffective and dangerous legislation. God bless you, and please continue making your pro-life voices heard in the Wisconsin Senate!

USING PRAYER AND ACTION TO FIGHT EVIL

23 souls joined us last Monday night at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Madison for a two-hour-long jammed-packed session with helpful tips and stories about how others can go to abortion centers and effectively save lives. Dan shared that it was in Madison, at Planned Parenthood, where he went to test his newfound vocation for sidewalk counseling on August 4th, 2010, saving Audry's ten-week-old preborn baby by simply asking her to come down to the sidewalk to talk.

"We know that abortion is a completely unnatural thing for a mother to do to her baby, so why not have a conversation about life, where death abounds at the abortion centers?  When a house is on fire, firefighters do not sit around and pray for the fire to go out.  NO! They get in their fire truck and go to where the fire is. They use water to fight the fire, we use prayer and action to fight evil.  It's that simple."
To bring PLW to your group or church to discuss the pro-life issue, please reach out to Dan Miller at Dan.M@ProLifeWI.org or call his cell phone at 262-993-6262.
