REMEMBERING VICKI THORN

This Thursday marks one year since the pro-life movement lost an incredible advocate and friend. Vicki Thorn, founder of the post-abortive ministry Project Rachel, died at the age of 72 on April 20, 2022. Her life's legacy of helping women and men find healing after abortion continues to resonate throughout the United States.

Vicki was inspired to help post-abortive men and women after her own friend had an abortion. Vicki knew that her friend needed someone to walk alongside her. She remarked, "It was a life-changing experience for me, in understanding that abortion was not a non-event, that it left enormous footprints in someone's life and enormous pain.” This encounter was the catalyst for Vicki's work in the pro-life movement and eventually her post-abortive healing ministry. She became one of the first to focus on the need for healing after abortion, founding Project Rachel in Milwaukee in 1984.

Nearly 40 years after its founding, Project Rachel continues her legacy by providing those living with the aftermath of abortion with healing, pastoral counseling, retreats, and referrals to licensed mental health professionals. Many of these women and men struggle with depression, feelings of guilt and shame, and grief over their abortion or abortions. Project Rachel provides hope and healing to a culture wounded by abortion. Rest in peace, Vicki, faithful servant of Jesus Christ!

PRO-LIFE NEWS

HIGH COURT TEMPORARILY BLOCKS RESTRICTIONS ON ABORTION PILL: (Associated Press) – “The Supreme Court said Friday it was temporarily keeping in place federal rules for use of an abortion drug, while it takes time to more fully consider the issues raised in a court challenge. In an order signed by Justice Samuel Alito, the court put a five-day pause on the fast-moving case so the justices can decide whether lower court rulings restricting the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the drug, mifepristone, should be allowed to take effect in the short term. The justices are being asked at this point only to determine what parts of an April 7 ruling by U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in Texas, as modified by an appellate ruling Wednesday, can be in force while the case continues. The order expires late Wednesday, suggesting the court will decide that issue by then.” Read the full story here.

ABORTION BANS RAISE GOP FEARS OF BACKLASH IN 2024: (LA Times/Associated Press) – “As a new election season begins, the Republican Party is struggling to navigate the politics of abortion. Allies for leading presidential candidates concede that their hard-line antiabortion policies may be popular with the conservatives who decide primary elections, but they could ultimately alienate the broader set of voters they need to win the presidency.” Read the full story here.

‘HISTORIC DAY’: FLORIDA’S PRO-LIFE LEADERS REACT TO SIX-WEEK ABORTION BAN SIGNED BY DESANTIS: (LifeSiteNews) – “Pro-life groups weighed in Friday on the passage and signing into law of Florida’s new ‘heartbeat bill,’ which bans nearly all abortions in the state after a baby’s heartbeat can be detected. While one grassroots group says the measure doesn’t ‘go far enough,’ another has hailed it as a crucial victory and a major step beyond the state’s pre-Dobbs 15-week ban. […] Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the measure into law Thursday night, hours after it cleared the state House. The legislation will make it illegal to deliberately kill an unborn baby after his heartbeat can be detected, which is usually about six weeks’ gestation. The bill also allocates dollars to support families in need, and blocks abortionists from using telehealth services to facilitate chemical abortions remotely. […] Notably, the Florida measure does not directly protect unborn babies who do not yet have a heartbeat, and contains numerous carveouts that would: permit the killing of unborn babies conceived in rape, incest, or human trafficking up to 15 weeks (though documentation proving the assault must be provided, e.g. a police report, and two physicians must sign off); allow abortions to save a woman’s life, something pro-lifers say is never necessary; and continue to allow women to obtain chemical abortions in the state if the abortion drugs are dispensed in person or by a licensed physician. For those reasons, the measure has drawn criticism from Tallahassee-based grassroots group Florida Voice for the Unborn, founded by Andrew Shirvell in 2020.” Read the full story here.
