PUBLIC HEARING ON BILL ALLOWING PHARMACISTS TO PRESCRIBE CONTRACEPTIVES
|
|
|
Legislation has been reintroduced by State Representatives Joel Kitchens (R-Sturgeon Bay) and Gae Magnafici (R-Dresser) permitting pharmacists to prescribe and dispense hormonal contraceptive patches (the Patch) and self-administered oral hormonal contraceptives (the Pill) to persons 18 years of age and older. Currently, the Pill and the Patch may only be prescribed by a physician or nurse practitioner. Assembly Bill (AB) 176 is co-authored by State Senator Mary Felzkowski (R-Irma).
Pro-Life Wisconsin OPPOSES legislation in whatever form that makes hormonal contraceptives more easily accessible or widely available. Please view our legislative memo here opposing AB 176. Studies demonstrate that the bill authors’ means to achieving lower unplanned pregnancies (easy contraceptive access and use) is unworkable. A significant percentage of unintended pregnancies are in women using contraceptives, generally over 40% and in some studies up to 68%. At the core of our opposition to AB 176 is the abortifacient effect of hormonal contraceptives. It is a medical fact that the morning-after pill (a high dosage of the birth control pill) and most if not all hormonal birth control drugs and devices including the intrauterine device (IUD), Depo Provera, the Patch, and the Pill can act to terminate a pregnancy by chemically altering the lining of the uterus (endometrium) so that a newly conceived child (human embryo) is unable to implant in the womb, thus starving and dying. This mechanism of action is termed a pre-implantation chemical abortion. When the Pill was first introduced it contained high estrogen levels with severe side effects. Today’s pills contain dramatically lower hormone doses which allow for breakthrough ovulation, embryo formation in the fallopian tube, and then blockage of implantation of the embryo in the uterine wall. The bill authors contend that hormonal contraceptives have no “potentially harmful side effects that require a
physician’s oversight.” We strongly disagree. Hormonal contraceptives have been proven dangerous to women’s health. The Pill is a known Group 1 carcinogen for breast, cervical and liver cancers according to the UN’s International Agency on Research of Cancer (IARC). Users of the Pill have an increased risk of blood clotting and ectopic pregnancy, both of which can be fatal. Lawsuits have been filed blaming the Patch for several deaths due to blood clots, heart attacks and strokes. It is not the proper role of the pharmacist to diagnose health conditions and prescribe powerful medications with clear health risks. With your help, Pro-Life Wisconsin will lead the fight against AB 176 in the Wisconsin Assembly. The Assembly Committee on Health, Aging and Long-Term Care will hold a public hearing on AB 176 tomorrow Tuesday, June 6, at 2:31 p.m. in Room 417 North (GAR Hall) of the State Capitol. Matt Sande, Pro-Life Wisconsin Legislative Director, and Elizabeth Anderson, MD, Assistant State Director of the Wisconsin Catholic Medical Guilds, will testify against AB 176.
- Please ATTEND the public hearing and testify or register
against AB 176.
- If you are unable to attend the public hearing, please CALL or EMAIL your state representative TODAY and urge him/her to OPPOSE AB 176. Tell them, “Hormonal contraceptives can kill embryonic children, are dangerous to women’s health, and do not reduce unplanned pregnancies!”
- Don’t know your State Representative? Visit legis.wisconsin.gov and type in your home address under
“Who Are My Legislators” or call the Legislative Hotline: 1-800-362-9472.
Thank you for making your pro-life voice heard!

THIS SATURDAY: THE ANNUAL PILL KILLS EVENT
Join us this Saturday, June 10, in West Allis for our annual Pill Kills event! Fifty-eight years ago, the Griswold v. Connecticut U.S. Supreme Court ruling (June 7, 1965) legalized contraception. The Court's decision was reasoned largely by the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, which protects the right to privacy. This "right to privacy" was used as the foundation to build the Roe v. Wade case, which was handed down years later on January 22, 1973. Over 62 million babies were slaughtered in the womb as a result of this type of raw judicial overreach. Although Roe v.
Wade has been overturned, it is important to know our history. We must never allow such an egregious decision to be rendered down upon our great land again. The purpose of our annual "Pill Kills" campaign is to draw attention to the dangers of the birth control pill and the fact that it does indeed cause early chemical abortions.
When: Saturday, June 10, 2023 – 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Where: Public sidewalks in front of Planned Parenthood (2239 S 108th St, West Allis, WI 53227)
Please park on Grant Street or Lincoln Avenue west of Hwy 100 and walk to the NW corner of Lincoln Ave & Hwy 100. Please do not park in their parking lot, as it is private property. Signs are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own too!

‘NUMBERS NOBODY HAS EVER SEEN’: HOW THE GOP LOST WISCONSIN. DID ABORTION MAKE WISCONSIN A BLUE STATE AGAIN?: (Politico, by David Siders) – “’On one of the days I was in Madison, a challenge to the state’s abortion ban was being heard in court. Outside, anti-abortion activists held signs that read, ‘Social justice starts in the womb,’ while a family prayed the
Rosary. Even if abortion was politically problematic for conservatives, said one of the demonstrators, Jill Yanke, it wasn’t something to compromise on: ‘A life is a life is a life.’ Chris O’Brien, standing nearby in a hat that said, ‘Real Men Pray Everyday,’ called abortion a ‘human rights issue.’ Matt Sande, legislative director of Pro-Life Wisconsin, told me polls ‘don’t dictate our principles,’ even if he suspects abortion ‘absolutely’ will factor in the 2024 elections and that ‘there may be some short-term losses.’ Up the street from the courthouse the next evening, at a rally at the state Capitol, a crowd of conservatives swayed on the lawn, eyes closed and arms raised, while kids took turns rolling down a grassy
hill. On the steps, a speaker raised his fist and screamed, ‘Jesus!’ then handed the microphone to a man who thanked God that ‘Wisconsin is a pro-life state.’ At the back of the crowd, Billie Johnson, who was recently elected chair of the GOP in Wisconsin’s 2nd Congressional District, said, ‘We’re trying to change hearts and minds, but it’s hard sledding.’ Read the full story here.
BALTIMORE PRO-LIFERS ASSAULTED OUTSIDE PLANNED PARENTHOOD SPEAK OUT FOLLOWING BRUTAL ATTACK: (LifeSiteNews) – “The two elderly pro-life Catholic sidewalk counselors who were violently assaulted outside a Baltimore Planned
Parenthood spoke to LifeSiteNews’ Jim Hale in a video report June 1. In the video, the men described the attack and called on younger Catholic men to
step up to support sidewalk counselors who risk their own physical safety to try to protect the unborn.” See the video and read the full story here.
RON DESANTIS: “I STAND FOR A CULTURE OF LIFE” AND “PROTECTION OF UNBORN BABIES”: (LifeNews.com) – “Campaigning in New Hampshire for the Republican nomination for president, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he stands for a “culture of life” and that would be the pro-life position he would take into the White House if elected president. ‘I stand for a culture of life and
in Florida the protection for unborn babies starts when there is detectable heartbeat,’ he said. ‘And now there are exceptions for rape, incest, life of the mother, victims of human trafficking and all that. And that was important to a lot of our legislators and people in Florida.’” Read the full story here.
PLANNED PARENTHOOD TWEET CLAIMS ‘ANY REASON IS THE RIGHT REASON’ TO ABORT A CHILD: (Live Action) – “Planned Parenthood, the country’s biggest abortion chain, recently released an ad featuring a transgender-identifying individual who underwent an abortion, with the chain also claiming that any reason is a good reason to kill a preborn child. Planned Parenthood’s initial claim — that ‘any reason’ is an acceptable reason to have an abortion — opens the door to many other things — like using abortion to cover up crimes, racially-motivated abortions, or aborting because the baby is the ‘wrong’ gender.” Read the full story here.
