STATE ASSEMBLY TO VOTE WEDNESDAY ON BILL PERMITTING PHARMACISTS TO PRESCRIBE CONTRACEPTIVES

The Wisconsin Assembly has scheduled a floor vote this Wednesday, June 21, on Assembly Bill (AB) 176, legislation authored by Representatives Joel Kitchens (R-Sturgeon Bay) and Gae Magnafici (R-Dresser) permitting pharmacists to prescribe hormonal contraceptive patches (the Patch) and self-administered oral hormonal contraceptives (the Pill) to persons 18 years of age and older. Currently, the Pill and the Patch may only be prescribed by a physician or nurse practitioner.

Pro-Life Wisconsin (PLW) OPPOSES any legislation that makes hormonal contraceptives more easily accessible or widely available. On June 6, PLW Legislative Director Matt Sande
testified before the Assembly Committee on Health, Aging and Long-Term Care in opposition to AB 176. On June 14, the bill was recommended for Assembly floor passage by the Health Committee on a 13-1 vote with Representative Dave Murphy (R-Greenville) being the lone NO vote.

Attempting to lower unplanned pregnancies by making contraceptives more easily accessible simply doesn’t work. A significant percentage of unintended pregnancies are in women using contraceptives, generally over 40% and in some studies up to 68%. Hormonal contraceptives can cause pre-implantation chemical abortions by altering the lining of the uterus (endometrium) so that a newly conceived child (human embryo) is unable to implant in the womb, thus starving and dying. Hormonal contraceptives have also been proven dangerous to women’s health. The Pill is a known Group 1 carcinogen for breast, cervical and liver cancers according to the United Nation’s International Agency on Research of Cancer. It is not the proper role of the pharmacist to diagnose health conditions and prescribe powerful medications with clear health risks.

Elizabeth Anderson, MD, Assistant State Director of the Wisconsin Catholic Medical Guilds, provided written
testimony to the Assembly Committee on Health, Aging and Long-Term Care in opposition to AB 176. According to Dr. Anderson, AB 176 is to be strongly opposed because,

“[…] the patient-physician relationship is of utmost importance in providing safe, quality healthcare to individuals. This bill would eliminate that relationship, undermining the ongoing necessary healthcare that a patient should have with any prescription medication and any health condition. Primary care physicians have a unique relationship with their patients in which they can provide individualized counseling and recommendations, as well as discuss risks of prescription medications unique to each individual patient. This relationship and individualized care is eliminated if this bill moves forward.”

Put simply, AB 176 is bad medicine. Wisconsin Family Action and the Wisconsin Catholic Conference also oppose AB 176.

Please
CALL or EMAIL your state representative TODAY and urge him/her to “Vote NO on AB 176.”

  • Tell them, “Hormonal contraceptives can kill embryonic children, are dangerous to women’s health, and do not reduce unplanned pregnancies!”
  • Tell them, “AB 176 eliminates the patient-physician relationship. It is bad medicine!”

BILLBOARDS ON THE BORDERS:
COMPASSIONATELY PROTECTING LIFE

Thanks to a tremendously generous donor, Pro-Life Wisconsin is covering the Wisconsin borders and major cities with the pro-life message all summer long! The intent of this campaign is to reach abortion-bound women leaving Wisconsin to obtain an abortion with the pro-life message of compassion, care, and abundant help.

Many women seeking an abortion are desperately hoping for a sign to keep their baby and reject the coercive pressure of family, friends, or their partner. “We know from working with women and men in their struggle to choose life for their child, many are making deals with God,” said Dan Miller, State Director of Pro-Life Wisconsin. “Some simply ask God to show them a sign to not have the abortion. We decided to give them a really big sign!" Pro-Life Wisconsin’s billboards will be that beacon of hope for women, offering them real help in their time of need.

Coming home to Wisconsin from out of state, women will also be met with Pro-Life Wisconsin billboards offering post-abortive healing help and Abortion Pill Reversal information should they regret their abortion and seek to save their baby. Dan Miller, State Director of Pro-Life Wisconsin commented, "If they are having second thoughts about their abortion, help and hope is available. There is a group of medical doctors trained in safe protocol to reverse the effects of the first pill in the chemical abortion regimen. The first 24 hours are critical, so a billboard on the way back from the neighboring state is the best way to reach these women in time.” No woman should feel as though they are alone or abandoned. Visit ProLifeWI.org/help for a glimpse of the tender care these women are met with!

If you’d like to financially support this campaign and extend the life of these billboards, please give to the True to Life Media Campaign fund here today.

His story is filled with practical advice on what we can do to increase our effectiveness in advocating for the preborn. We hope you will join us for Dr. Levatino's compelling testimony and an unforgettable night of supporting life!

PRO-LIFE NEWS

ASSEMBLY LAWMAKERS LOOK AT ALLOWING PHARMACISTS TO PRESCRIBE BIRTH CONTROL: (Wisconsin Examiner) – “Patients over the age of 18 would be able to get a birth control prescription from a pharmacist rather than a primary care physician, under a bill considered by Wisconsin Assembly lawmakers on Tuesday. Rep. Joel Kitchens (R-Sturgeon Bay), the lead Assembly bill author, told the Assembly Health, Aging and Long-Term Care committee that he decided to reintroduce the bill because of continued barriers to accessing birth control and the high costs associated with unplanned pregnancies. […] The bill has a long way to go, with several anti-abortion groups continuing to lobby against it, and it has yet to be considered by the Senate. Wisconsin’s major anti-abortion organizations — Pro-Life Wisconsin, Wisconsin Family Action and Wisconsin Catholic Conference — are registered against the bill. The Wisconsin Catholic Medical Guild is the only medical group that registered against the bill. Matt Sande, legislative director for Pro-Life Wisconsin, testified to the committee that hormonal methods of birth control are ‘abortifacients’ and said the group doesn’t want the government doing anything that promotes access. He also said birth control is ineffective and therefore should not be supported by the state.” Read the full story here.

PRO-LIFE LEADERS URGE U.S. POLITICIANS TO EMBRACE EQUAL PROTECTION FOR UNBORN BABIES NATIONWIDE: (LifeSiteNews) – “More than two dozen prominent pro-life voices have signed onto a declaration that nationwide equal protection of the preborn must be the ‘north star’ of the pro-life movement, throwing down a bold gauntlet at a time when Republicans are divided on how to navigate a post-Roe v. Wade legal landscape. Organized by Live Action and published Thursday in National Review, the statement declares that, ‘[n]ow that Roe is gone, the pro-life movement must direct its efforts to achieving our ultimate goal: ending abortion by ensuring equal protection for children in the womb,’ arguing that ‘[t]here can be no distinction between someone’s biological humanity and his or her legal personhood.’” Read the full story here.

COMPANY WILL GIVE EMPLOYEES A “BABY BONUS” TO HELP BUILD STRONG FAMILIES: (LifeNews.com) – “As a response to woke corporations incentivizing employee abortions, one conservative CEO says he will offer his employees a $5,000 ‘baby bonus’ to help sustain their families. PublicSq. Founder and CEO Michael Seifert believes ‘strong families make a strong nation.’ But when the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last summer, he began witnessing a lot of companies grandly making ‘impassioned petitions to pay for their employees’ abortions. I was shocked by that because it’s an immoral and egregious act for an employer to pay for an employee to terminate their children,’ he told The Daily Signal. ‘That’s my opinion. But on top of that, it was also a very blatantly obvious move for just more productivity out of their employees. And it was a stifling of [employees’] potential desires to have families.’ At PublicSq., Seifert said, the company is only as strong as the families that have built it.” Read the full story here.
