PRO-LIFE GROUPS CALL ON MILWAUKEE AND DANE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEYS TO ENFORCE ABORTION BAN

(Madison) – On September 18, 2023, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin resumed the provision of “abortion services” at its facilities in Milwaukee and Madison, even though a state law banning abortion is currently in effect. In response, a coalition of pro-life groups – Wisconsin Right to Life, Pro-Life Wisconsin, and Wisconsin Family Action – held a press conference at the State Capitol in Madison on September 26, 2023, demanding that the district attorneys of Milwaukee and Dane counties, John Chisholm and Ismael Ozanne, respectively, enforce Wisconsin’s statutory abortion ban, s.940.04.

Chisholm and Ozanne have stated publicly that they will not enforce Wisconsin Statute 940.04 which criminalizes the intentional destruction of the life of an unborn child and defines “unborn child” as “a human being from the time of conception until it is born alive.” Violation of the statute is a Class H felony punishable by up to 6 years in state prison, a maximum fine of $10,000, or both. The statute has been in effect since Roe v. Wade was overturned by the United States Supreme Court in their Dobbs ruling on June 24, 2022.

ANTI-ABORTION GROUPS DEMAND LIBERAL WISCONSIN PROSECUTORS CHARGE ABORTION PROVIDERS DESPITE RULING: (AP News) – “A coalition of anti-abortion organizations on Tuesday demanded that prosecutors in Wisconsin’s two largest counties bring charges against abortion providers who have resumed practicing following a court ruling that consensual abortions are legal in the state. Wisconsin Right to Life, Wisconsin Family Action and Pro-Life Wisconsin held a news conference in the state Capitol to call for Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne and Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm to prosecute abortion providers in their counties.” Read the full story here.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD PLANS TO RESUME ABORTION SERVICES IN SHEBOYGAN: (Milwaukee CBS Channel 58) – “After reopening their doors to abortion services this past week in Madison and Milwaukee, Planned Parenthood said they are working to resume services at the Sheboygan clinic soon. Planned Parenthood officials told CBS 58 they're planning to again offer medical abortions at the Sheboygan location once they resolve a staffing issue. […] Since last Monday, Planned Parenthood resumed the procedure at clinics in Dane and Milwaukee County following a court ruling that stated consensual abortions are not illegal in Wisconsin. However, resuming the practice in Sheboygan could be problematic. That's because Sheboygan County District Attorney Joel Urmanski has said he would prosecute doctors who violate the 1849 ban. Urmanski was not immediately available for comment. Pro-Life Wisconsin and other anti-abortion groups were skeptical of Planned Parenthoods decision. ‘We believe the reason they are not doing abortions in Sheboygan County is because District Attorney Urmanski would not allow them to do it and he would enforce the statute," said Matt Sande, Pro-Life Wisconsin legislative director. ‘So, we'll have to see how bold Planned Parenthood is and what they do.’ Sande and other anti-abortion groups believe it's illegal for health care professionals to carry out the procedure because of a pending lawsuit that seeks to determine whether the state's 1849 abortion ban is enforceable.” Read and watch the full story here.
